Atlantic College commits to 10% reduction in carbon emissions in 2010
Most people have heard of the 10:10 campaign. It is a commitment that can be made by individuals, businesses and organisations to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 10% in the year 2010. At Atlantic College the staff and students felt strongly that they should make this commitment. Though a challenge, the commitment fits in with the college’s ethos of international understanding and sustainable development. After a few months of preparation, finalising proposals, consultations and meetings, the college was ready to fully commit. On Friday November 27th the entire school was summoned for a special assembly, 500 faces turned to watch the stage as the principal, Neil Richards, stood up to speak, ‘This is a big deal...’ he began and he went on to emphasise what an important step this was and how it would further unite the entire college community. Director of College Operations, Paul Motte described how Atlantic College will tackle this goal and how everyone can contribute. Paul also highlighted some of the key CO2 reducing initiatives in progress by the college including a biomass heating system, low-carbon technologies in refurbished student accommodation, wind powered lighting along external pathways and new environmentally-friendly dishwashing methods.
Charlie Young, an Atlantic College student and one of the initiators of the school’s sign up, took the stage: ‘Global warming,’ he told us ‘is the biggest challenge that has ever faced humanity’ and gave his view of the 10:10 campaign, ‘it is the most inspiring, exciting, initiative Atlantic College has ever done. It is taking our morals and beliefs into action and brings global ideas back to the entire college community.’
The commitment has been made, but everyone understands that this is only the beginning and making the change is going to be challenge. However, the launch of 10:10 demonstrates that it is a challenge that the whole of Atlantic College is prepared to make and the students are now working on getting more people outside of the college to commit also. So go on - join up!

GALE FORCE WINDS CAPTURED AT ATLANTIC COLLEGE!
The recent bad weather and extreme winds have been a hindrance to most but at Atlantic College in St Donat's Castle in South Wales they couldn’t have arrived at a more appropriate time!
The first of the United World College’s has this weekend continued to demonstrate its commitment to the mission statement ‘to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future’ with a Sustainability Forum held on campus. Staff and students took part in a series of workshops that covered topics including Permaculture and Biodiversity and learned from lectures from the Centre for Alternative Technology and the Welsh School of Architecture.
A key part of the weekend was the ‘wind turbine workshop’ which was carried out by Engineers Without Borders. The workshop was a practical introduction to building a wind turbine from scratch and concluded with the erection of a turbine onsite, of which most of the construction was carried out by the students and staff of Atlantic College.
The turbine will go into a testing phase in order to provide an estimate of the amount of wind energy it can harness. It is hoped that in the future it will yield enough energy to support the college’s energy supply used in lighting. The initial turbine will be a useful ‘test’ for future sustainability solutions for the college.
