Dynamic education for freethinkers

Home > About AC

One of twelve United World College campuses worldwide and the only one in the UK, Atlantic College admits 170 students a year, aged 16 to 19, from more than 75 countries, with the aim of fostering respect for diverse cultural, social and religious backgrounds. Students from diverse nationalities live together for two years in South Wales, and study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, a pre-university qualification which was piloted at the College.

An Atlantic College education is a rigorous experience that equips students socially, academically, philosophically and morally for their journey through life. Despite outstanding academic performances, the College is less focussed on purely teaching a curriculum to students than on educating the ‘whole self’. High academic standards, a strong emphasis on community service and a wide range of cultural and outdoor activities are all part of the challenge and excitement of an Atlantic College education.

The breadth of the academic programme, the unsurpassed range of community service activities and the sheer diversity of student intake give Atlantic College students the space and impetus to develop in unusually full and distinctive ways.  Students serve their local community while learning about the globalised world from new-found friends with unfamiliar outlooks. Core beliefs are challenged and new worlds are possible. A far-flung nation becomes the face of a friend. The experience is like no other and it changes lives.

Selection to Atlantic College is based on merit regardless of financial circumstances, and coupled with the College’s scholarship programme this ensures that the school is global but that entrance is not for the global elite.

While most leave to pursue degrees in some of the world's most respected universities, Atlantic College prepares students to embark on life as emotionally mature and globally aware adults, ready to make a positive difference in their future communities.

Established in 1962, Atlantic College was the first school in the UK to follow an international curriculum, and launched the UWC movement that now spans the globe. It is still the only global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world with the explicit aim of fostering peace and international understanding.
