Here are some of the fascinating and quirky facts about UWC Atlantic College. If you know more, let us know and we will include them here. We are aiming to reach a total of 50 to match our 50th anniversary year. 

Did you know there have been 8 Principals at UWC Atlantic College.                                                                                                          

Did you know the earliest surviving structures of the castle, the Keep and the Inner Wall, were built in the late 12th Century.

Did you know the kitchen uses approximately 252 loaves of brown/white bread a week.

Did you know approximately 1750 students have been trained as Lifeguards since the club came into being. 

Did you know that Deans of Admissions from Ivy League universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Brown visit annually to interview students. 

Did you know the new Kurt Hahn Experiential Core Activity, weekly morning swims and mental exercise, is currently the biggest activity so far with 58 members. (29 girls and 29 boys). 

Did you know there are 5 Scottish students studying at the college at present although only 1 lives in Scotland.

Did you know there have been 9 Chairs of Governors at UWC Atlantic College.

Did you know there are currently 84 students and 8 members of staff trained as lifeguards.

Did you know Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is Patron of UWC Atlantic College.

Did you know the Bradenstoke Hall roof is from an early 14th Century roof brought from Bradenstoke Abbey in Wiltshire.

Did you know our longest serving member of staff is John Miles who started at the college as part of the maintenance team in 1969, he was told there was only enough funding for him to be employed for 6 months!

Did you know the current Chemistry Technician Mrs Val Lynch's great uncle, Walter Maddy, met his future wife Bertha whilst they were both working at St Donats Castle as Butler and Kitchen Maid for William Randolph Hearst in the 1930's.

Did you know on 15 September 2010, United Words blog (www.unitedwords.org) had a record number of views with 817 readers.

Did you know staff members have a combined lifeguarding experience of 91 years.

Did you know that UWC Atlantic College students each undertake 400 hours of community action and service during their time a the college.

Did you know that on average 25kgs of sugar, a week, keeps the students sweet!

Did you know the average scores by our students in their IB diploma is 37, a full 10 points higher than the worldwide average.

Did you know UWC Atlantic College was the first Lifeguard Club in Wales and was established in 1962.

Did you know that from the Dining Hall to the History Department, through the winding staircase, there are 48 steps.

Did you know the Late President, John F Kennedy, learnt to swim in the castle pool.

Did you know the amount of fruit consumed in the Dining Hall, in an average week, is 12 of boxes apples, 9 boxes of oranges and 3 boxes of pears.

Did you know that 150 of the college alumni are also celebrating their 50th birthday this year. Happy Birthday!

Did you know the EMS (Environmental Monitoring Service), originally run by James Mendelssohn, was a prime mover in getting Lundy Island established as the first marine reserve in UK waters, achieved by research of college students.

Did you know that 25 gallons of milk are used in an average week at the college.

Did you know one of our second year students holds the UWC Atlantic College record of 112 push ups a minute.

Did you know there have been 7 college Bursars in the last 50 years.

Did you know William Randolph Hearst bought the castle for £45,000 and revitalised the castle in 1925.

Did you know, to date, the UWC Atlantic College has had 3 Somali students with one student currently attending the college.

Did you know UWC Atlantic College is said to be the most haunted castle in Wales and the 9th in the UK.

Did you know since its opening, over 7803 students from over 100 countries have benefited from the inspiring and innovative educational experience promoted at UWC Atlantic College.

Did you know UWC Atlantic College first opened its doors in 1962.
