UWC Atlantic is the founding College of the United World Colleges global education movement. Its home is the beautiful 12th Century St Donat's Castle in South Wales, where students from over 90 countries come for two years to live and work together in a dynamic learning landscape.

Grounds Maintenance and Facilities Management (GMFM) Operative

The GMFM team is responsible for all grounds maintenance - grass cutting, planting schemes, landscaping, maintenance - and also facilities management such as portering, and the set up and take down of rooms, and events.

Working as part of a team, you will maintain external grounds and buildings, conduct routine, reactive and planned maintenance tasks such as pool checks, odd jobs, fire alarm testing, jet washing, gardening and providing a portering and postal service on campus whilst ensuring that work is carried out to a high standard, and within strict deadlines.

The role requires a flexible approach to workload, with the successful applicant having the ability to adapt to changing workload demands. Due to the nature of the role there will be occasions when the post holder is required to work alone, and occasional weekends.

The Recruitment Process

For all roles within the College, you will need to complete an application form on which you should use the Supporting Information pages to explain why you are interested in the role and detailing how you meet the essential requirements of the person specification that will be assessed at application stage.

You do not need to address those criteria which will only be addressed at interview or through an assessment centre process. Please note that we are not able to accept CVs on their own, although in some cases they may be asked for in Supporting Documentation and we can only consider applications if all the documentation is complete.

Applications must be received by midnight on the closing date specified and if you are shortlisted for a position, we will then let you know when the interviews will take place. These can be at the College or remotely and we will organise accordingly. We usually reserve the right to appoint early for exceptional candidates.

If the interview process is onsite, for some positions this will involve a tour of the campus and key tasks on the day, including a presentation, but we will let you know when each position is advertised.

  • Annual Leave - Annual leave will be 25 days (rising to 30 days after 5 complete years’ service) plus 8 public holidays.
  • Accommodation - Accommodation may be available on campus for the successful candidate.
  • Meals - Employees are entitled to one meal per day to be taken on campus (this will vary if you live onsite and have additional responsibilities.
  • Use of Campus Facilities - The health and wellbeing of our employees is important and free use of the College gym and swimming pools is available for all employees (subject to health and safety guidelines). If you wish to attend any additional classes that are running, a small charge would be made for these activities.
  • Learning and Development - UWC Atlantic is committed to developing its people and our employees have access to a range of training and development opportunities to enable them to perform their duties effectively. Development plans and options are discussed in personal performance reviews.
  • College Events - Employees are invited to attend a College BBQ at the end of the Summer Term and a Christmas Party in early December. We also expect that employees will be able to offer some of their time to support the wider College community events, such as reunions, as these help to strengthen bonds with the wider UWC Atlantic community.
  • Death in Service Benefit - If an employee died in service, their estate would receive a payment equivalent to three times their annual salary.
  • Hours of Work - It should be recognised that some roles may not be able to be satisfactorily undertaken within a fixed working week and some element of unsocial hours will be required for the proper performance of the responsibilities.
  • Sick Pay - Sickness Pay will be paid in accordance with the College policy.
  • Pension - The Pensions Trust and NEST. You will automatically be enrolled in to the Scheme unless you state otherwise on appointment.
  • Car Mileage Allowance - If you need to use your vehicle for business purposes you will be reimbursed at the HMRC mileage rate.
  • Smoking - The college is a no smoking campus.
  • Flexibility and Mobility - As a term of your employment you may be required to undertake such other duties and/or times of work as may reasonably be required of you commensurate with your grade or general level of responsibility.
  • Satisfactory Medical Report - A satisfactory medical report is required on initial appointment.
  • Probationary Period - Most roles are subject to the satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period, but this can vary from post to post.
  • Notice Periods - These can vary from between one and three months in writing on either side, but this can be changed by mutual agreement.
  • DBS Checks - All candidates who are offered employment will be subject to an enhanced check for regulated activity from the Disclosure and Barring Service before the appointment is confirmed.
  • References - We will usually contact the referees you have indicated on your application form prior to interview, unless otherwise directed.
