Media and Communication Service
Media and Communication Service uses Macintosh computers to enable training in still and moving image generation and editing through digital photography and video. It provides a valuable media service for the both the local and global community groups as well as the college community in the form of; photography, short films, marketing material-including posters, flyers and book design, educational promotional DVD’s, podcasts and articles for websites. The service is also proud to continue providing a vital Media and Communication service for the college Yearbook, Yearposter and Year DVD. Students are trained in studio lighting techniques using digital SLR and mini DV equipment to provide essential photographic and filmic support for the community, IB academic exam work documentation and DVD authoring for university applications. The service also creates promotional DVD’s for both Health and youth organisation charities in the local community (including Diabetes Cymru and Major Music) to strengthen the social dimension of the service. Photographic printing from historical negatives and photographic image reparation services have been provided for Local Historical Societies. Recently Videographers offer a filming and editing service for members of their community or college who wish to upload short stories to Storyvault.com. The service has benefited immensely from film companies using the college campus to shoot feature films and television series, enabling them to watch professionals in action and visit production company studios.
Digital Video captures and edits all the college events including; Academics and Services, 10:10 Environmental Symposium, MUN, International Show, Student Houses, Fashion Show, Time Based Art and Performances events and talks on campus. These edits are regularly screened throughout the college. Their training includes; storyboarding, scripting, interviewing, frame composition, underwater filming, lighting and audio, chromakey special effects and post-production editing. Post Production editing software includes Mac native software including Final Cut Studio iMovie, iDVD and Garageband, also the Adobe Master Collection cross platform software where students have the opportunity to develop numerous post-production skills.
Digital Photography is responsible for providing essential visual records of college members, visitors and events for college publicity and communication purposes. They are trained to use Digital SLR cameras with professional studio lighting. Their graphic design and desktop publishing skills are also developed via Adobe InDesign and Photoshop in the creation of calendars, yearbooks, health education leaflets and promotional graphics on demand. These students provide a vital photographic and design callout service in order to capture the many events and members of the UWC Atlantic College community for both internal and external websites.
