Personal Statement

I am Raia from Maldives and I believe that I am one of the luckiest people to have been given the chance to attend UWC Atlantic College and experience the UWC movement.

I live in Whitaker House and am studying English language and literature, Economics and Biology at higher level,  Mathematics and Music at standard level and French ab initio. I am in Art Center service and hope to learn a lot from the service in the next two years.

In the past few weeks I have been making new friends and experiencing a completely different and amazing environment. I believe that being in UWC Atlantic College opens a lot of opportunities for me. It allows me to learn to take responsibility and share my opinions and culture with others while learning about cultures that I do not know about. It is a positive change that would hopefully broaden my horizons.

Dear sponsors,

I am very grateful to be able to study in UWC of Atlantic. The two months that I have been here so far have been a challenge and a vast change for me. Making new friends and speaking in English (my second language) at all times as I have no co years or second years at Atlantic College, in a whole new environment was the biggest challenge I faced. Yet it is also the best part of being here. The cultural differences are very interesting and to experience a bit of all cultures from all around the world is unbelievably amazing.

I live in Whitaker House and I was very curious and impatient to meet my roommates before I arrived. They are from Texas, Nigeria and France/Cameroon. We all get alo9ng very well and I cannot imagine myself in any other room.

I study English Language and Literature, Economics and Biology at higher level as well as French (ab initio), Mathematics and Music at standard level. The monthly grades I received were all not up to my expectations although they were good, so I hope to improve and learn more as I go.

The weather is the strangest thing that I have experienced since I arrived. I have always lived in the Maldives where we experience only two seasons, the warm and the rainy season. I find it very cold here but I cannot wait till it snows as I have never seen snow. It is going to be an amazing and unforgettable first winter as I plan to travel instead of going back home this winter. For the half term break I traveled to London to visit friends from home. It was a very nice and relaxing break from academics.

I have already done things that I would not have gotten to do normally such as coasteering and I have seen breathtaking views that are so different from what I am used to. The opportunities to do things that I could not have done are endless which is one of the things I love about this school.

My goals include getting a better education and hopefully getting more opportunities to study further as well as traveling around the world. I feel that being here gets me one step closer to my goals. I have made friends from all around the world and I hope to get unforgettable experiences at my time at Atlantic College.

Yours Faithfully,

Fathimath Raia Musthafa
