Yoyo and her team - South Pole Race
South Pole Race 2011-2012, the toughest endurance race in the world.
A grueling 704 km race to the Geographic South Pole in Antarctica
Yoyo Schepers, long-time supporter of the UWC movement and wife of UWC Atlantic College alumnus Manfred Schepers, will be following in the footsteps of Capt. Robert F. Scott and Roald Amundsen in a race to the South Pole.
Commemorating the centenary year of the original Scott/Amundsen race, Yoyo and her team will battle the same harsh conditions experienced by the original explorers, using skis and pulling their own sledges all the way to the Pole. The teams will only pass one check-point on route to re-stock supplies during the 5 week race. During the race they can expect to experience 80mph winds, temperatures as low as -40C and the threat of blinding snowstorms, deep crevasses and treacherous snow bridges.
The race starts on 14th December in Cape Town, South Africa where the teams will assemble their kit.
From there they will fly to NOVO, a Russian scientific outpost in the Queen Maud Land region of Antarctica. In NOVO they will spend 10 days acclimatising and making final checks on their kit and supplies before starting the dash to the South Pole.

Yoyo and her team have two goals to spur them on during their endurance test:
- Win the race!
- Support bursaries for female students to attend UWC Atlantic College tsunami affected areas of Japan and from conflict zones around the world.
Yoyo and her team will need as much support and encouragement as they can get on their epic journey.
Please show your support and leave Yoyo and her team a message on their JustGiving pages at:
