Alumni Rescue Boat Helps Refugees

05 Jan

One of the college boats operated in Lesbos, the Greek Island, over the December period with our alumni volunteering assistance to arrivals of refugees.

On the first day during bad weather in the Aegean Sea, the college boat brought in two boats of refugees from a boat with a failing engine. Alumni volunteers included Robin Jenkins, UWC Atlantic College, class of 1992 and Lily Eckersley Jones, UWC Atlantic College, class of 2013.

The small teams of international volunteers have help train and support the Greek lifeguards and provide support by guiding in boats to safe areas of the beach.

A vast amount of those migrating to Europe during 2015 have come via this small island - an average of 2,000 a day throughout December alone.
