Alumna leads 'Safari Doctors'

08 Sep

Meet Umra Omar, alumna of UWC Atlantic College (2000 - 2002). This young woman has recently been featured by CNN Heroes, which recognize people who are changing the world in their everyday life.

Umra decided to leave her career in the US to return to the Lamu Archipelago on the East Coast of Kenya, where she was born, to bring medical care to the most rural areas. The Eastern Coast of Kenya (once a sought-after tourist destination), is targeted by Islamist terror group Al-Shabaab, which has caused aid groups to flee the area.

Despite the unforgiving environment and high risks involved, the urgent need for healthcare in the region led Umra to create Safari Doctors, a locally-run, cost-effective programme helping the County of Lamu’s most remote village’s access vital medical care.

She says, “It was kind of a sense of responsibility to come back to where I was born.”
