South Wales Schools Chemistry Analyst Competition
- a winning team to take forward!
On Wednesday 16th January, Mich Creber and I took five teams of IB1 Chemistry students (3 per team) to
compete against 30 other teams from schools, around the South Wales region in The Schools Analyst
Competition, hosted by Swansea University. This is an annual national competition coordinated by
the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Analytical Division.
This competition is an opportunity for students to use analytical equipment not usually available in
schools, gain additional practical experience and apply their knowledge of chemistry to solve
problems. This is the first year we have taken the students out to compete in this competition so we didn't want to raise our expectations too high...
The day consisted of students performing two experiments, one using apparatus they already used in
class and another, using apparatus that they had no experience with. They learned new skills, as well
as demonstrated their existing knowledge, skills and aptitude for analytical science. They were
judged for skill, understanding and accuracy and were judged on promoting teamwork and safety in
The students loved the friendly competitive atmosphere and were very impressed with the cutting edge lab, especially the magnetic stirrer plates, as they didn’t have to stir the experiment themselves...
Over 100 students in the same place, all engaging excitedly, was quite a sight to see and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely.
Max, Emily and Yunice were the winning team of the day, but all our teams performed exceptionally well and we are extremely proud of them all. We were all really surprised with our success, as we had no idea in advance what the level of competition would be like - and it was extremely tough. The UWC Atlantic College team will be going on to the Final Round against 20 other regional winners, on 20th June 2019, at the University of Manchester. Wish us luck!
* The Schools' Analyst Competition is a competition run by the Royal Society of Chemistry's Analytical Division for first year Sixth Form students studying AS level Chemistry or equivalent (i.e. Year 12). The Analytical Division’s Regions hold heats, in early spring each year, to select a team or teams, to go through to the National Final (held in June). Each team comprises three students (with an accompanying teacher).
