Peer-Led Civic Education Project Week
College students Rosemary Yanxi Chen and Blanca Husell have founded Peer-Led Civic Education, an entirely student-led civic engagement project based in South Wales.
The initiative, first conceived in October 2018 and carried out as part of Project Week in March 2019, aims to contribute towards increasing civic engagement and political awareness among young people in Wales. The project group has two practical goals in the short term. First, to advocate for the inclusion of peer-led civic education into the secondary school curriculum. Second, to campaign for the passage of The Senedd and Election Bill, which would lower the minimum voting age to 16 by 2021.
To these ends, throughout the past week, the group carried out a self-designed civic education programme with over 120 pupils aged between 12-18 at three pilot schools: St. John Lloyd Catholic School in Llanelli, Stanwell School in Penarth and Whitmore High School in Barry. The programme was very well-received by all participants, who actively engaged in a series of workshops on democracy, voting, political systems, global political issues (in the Åland Islands, France, China, Canada, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Wales, Ireland) and a general election simulation. The group also met with Baroness Eluned Morgan — the Welsh Minister for International Relations, the Welsh Youth Parliament, Electoral Reform Society, Children’s Commissioner for Wales and Children in Wales to discuss young people’s civic and political participation and plans for collaboration in advancing the cause.
While Project Week has ended, the group has decided to continue the project. They welcome any interested individuals, schools or organizations to contact them at
