The Lighten your Load Swap Shop was sponsored by the Environmental Action Team to help students, especially second-years, to dispose of unwanted clothing and other items and reducing the amount of items they would take home at the end of the year.
It was held in the Great Hall in the castle and was a huge success. Over 70 students donated clothing and the hall was filled with chairs and tables covered in amazing clothes. Tokens were specially-prepared wood chips (worth 1, 3 or 5 tokens) and Devil's Toenails fossils (worth 10 tokens each). Students received tokens based on a small rubric, with each item being worth between 1 and 4 tokens depending on the type of item and its desirability. Other than clothing, students swapped jewellery, backpacks, DVDs and more, not to mention coats, hats, scarves and other winter gear.
Some of the remaining items will be sold off in the coming weeks and months to raise money for the Student Hardship Fund as well as a charity TBA benefitting the people of Nepal.
A raffle provided the following prizes: A first-year student won an Ortlieb 100% waterproof rain hat, a second year won a £11 shopping spree at Co-op, with transport included and sales of extra tokens covered most of the raffle items.
