On the 7 and 8 November, five students from UWC Atlantic College Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) team provided a valuable addition to the safety and marshal team for the 2015 British University Sailing Fleet Championships, held this year, for the first time ever in Cardiff Bay
The students battled the elements to use their well-practiced skills to launch and land sail boats of all classes and colours on the water at Cardiff Bay. The conditions for the sailors themselves were very tough but they were able to get on with the racing thanks to the well organised event team headed up by Daisy Tickner-Portet (Cardiff University).
It seemed like an 'easy' task putting the boats on trolleys and getting them in quickly and safely but other staff were amazed at how well the UWC Atlantic College team of Gabriel, Charlie, Ben, Muzzakir and Ahmad coped with the pressure - of course - it’s because launching and landing on the college slip way is the hardest and most critical part!
What in return? Well, the Cardiff University Sailing Team (which has some of the UK's top sailors) promised to return to UWC Atlantic College in the New Year and provide some sail training and coaching for our students!
A big well done to the students, getting up early, working in this wonderful welsh liquid sunshine and also Alun Wood who provided additional support over the weekend. Thanks to the teachers for the work they do on training and preparing the students for these kinds of opportunities.
